Lafitte’s Chance by Michael Roberts

Lafitte’s Chance by Michael Roberts

Thomas Cain puts it all on the line again in this exhilarating alternative American History time travel adventure novel! Thomas has managed to rescue Aden, but his futuristic gear is still missing while the Pirate King, Jean Lafitte, is breathing down his neck.

In his efforts to track his items down, will Thomas keep his agreement to bring the pirates to Jackson’s aid and achieve America’s first victory as a new country? Or will pride bring them all to defeat?

Aden is safe for the most part, and now Thomas must retrieve his missing weapons and gear. In doing so, he’s made an enemy of the Pirate King, Jean Lafitte, and his associates, and now he must trudge through the marshes of the Mississippi to follow them, find his missing Webley and vest, and make it back in time to meet up with Jackson.

Just when Thomas thinks that he’s managed to find his missing gear, he learns that not only has Lafitte’s wastrel brother Pierre absconded with the gear, but he’s left Jean Lafitte ready to hang.

In a last ditch effort to find Pierre, Thomas must make a deal with the devil himself and bring the villainous, once-reputable now-Pirate Queen Lady Theodosia with him to locate Pierre and his weapons, and make sure the pirates don’t hang for their offenses. Will the enemy of his enemy become his friend?

Another impossible task, or so it seems. But can the Pale Rider rise to the occasion once more, save the lives of hundreds, and keep his own neck out of a noose?

Lafitte’s Chance is the fifth book in the Pale Rider series, an alternate American Historical Military retelling, and is the next book in the trilogy set that focuses on the War of 1812. If you like American historical fiction, time travel, and alternate history, then discover Lafitte’s Chance today! ** it is recommended that the books are read in order! **

Education Aggravation by Leslie K. Brooks

A retired teacher’s take on our failing education system from the inside. Honest and controversial, Education Aggravation examines the roles of the various actors and elements: students, teachers, parents, administration, politicians, money, media and technology.

What is happening in our schools? Do schools prepare students for “real” life? How? Who calls the shots?

Students advance from grade to grade without learning how to read or decode. How is that possible? Parents have trouble with 3rd grade math. Why is that? Technology is doing the critical thinking for our students. Snap! The importance of lifelong learning needs to be stressed in the households, the schools and on social media.

Instead of throwing blind money at a never-ending fix and just passing students from grade to grade, we need to re-examine our goals for them from the ground up. The student is supposed to be the focus. Only by looking at the cultural dynamics molding our students and using the tools at our disposal (one being our brains) to develop their ability to think on their own can we help them navigate their individual success in an unknown future.

Inferno! by Tom Gormley

INFERNO! reveals the true story of the December 2021 Boulder County Marshall fire and the many events that can only be described as miracles that occur during and after. Interviews, local history and pictures convey the turmoil, tragedy and drama of this nightmare. These stories are intertwined with the police and fire dispatch broadcasts and public announcements to provide a timeline of the fire and its aftermath. With it, readers get a better understanding of how first responders attacked the fire, how the communities reacted, and how they are recovering. It also provides an overview of government responses and offers informational guidance on how to prepare for an emergency nearby.

The December 30, 2021, Marshall Fire outside of Boulder will be remembered as the most destructive inferno in Colorado history and one of the top fifteen worst fires in the western U.S.  In a little over four hours, the fire, fueled by high velocity Chinook winds, burns 6,026 acres, consumes 1,084 structures, and causes over $2 billion in damage.  Over 37,500 residents evacuate.  And yet miraculously, only two persons are killed and eight injured during the fire.  Scenes during the fire are surreal with one house engulfed in flames while its neighbor sits quietly next-door displaying Christmas lights.  The fury of the wind decides what burns and what stands untouched.

This is the story of the inferno, the heroes who fight it, the area history, the fire recovery, and the many miracles that happen along the way.
